The rescue of the only album by the La Solvencia Orchestra symbolizes very well the full meaning of the mission of the El Palmas label, stubborn in keeping the history of salsa alive in Venezuela, recovering the intrepid and genuine music with which the pillars of the salsa were built. gender.

El Palmas Music reissues the only album by the La Solvencia Orchestra
The history of the La Solvencia Orchestra is long and very particular. The group developed a career of more than twenty years, but recorded only one album, El guacal de la salsa, released in 1980, when a genre was beginning to expand and consolidate whose official baptism was the responsibility of a Venezuelan, Phidias Danilo Escalona, conductor from the radio program The hour of salsa, flavor and bembé.
The singer Felipe Díaz and other musicians from the creative Venezuelan orchestra had recorded a 45 RPM in the early 70s as La Órbita Nueva, which was the germ of La Solvencia, made up of people driven by curiosity and determination. “We were self-taught, empirical,” says the experienced singer Felipe Díaz now, in 2024. We played by vocation and by ear,” he adds. And the truth is that the ease of the La Solvencia Orchestra, as well as its freshness and conviction, certify its words.
La Solvencia gained experience by touring the towns of Barlovento in the company of La Dimensión Latina, the famous group of the great Oscar d'León, star of Latin music and winner of a Grammy. It was a virtuous society of musicians by nature. Felipe Díaz formed his first group at the age of 11, Los Tigritos del Ritmo. He had started singing at home, when he was just a child, Venezuelan and Mexican a cappella music. Los Tigritos del Ritmo had guitars, tumbadora, timbales, bongos, marimbula and, of course, Díaz's unmistakable voice. “I never studied, but I am lucky to be sharp,” he says proudly. That youth orchestra later led to El Gran Grupo, which still exists as El Gran Grupo de Venezuela.
The reissue of a gem like El guacal de la salsa follows the program of the El Palmas Music label, created by the musician, DJ, designer and cultural agitator Maurice Aymard and aimed at preserving and disseminating the heritage of Venezuelan popular music, respecting in all cases the original conceptions of their valuable artists.
In this case recovering an album recorded more than forty years ago that gives an idea of the vitality that Venezuelan salsa already had in that memorable era in cultural terms.
The La Solvencia Orchestra was made up of Pablo Echenique (alto sax, orchestral arrangements), David Chino Hernández (bass), Ramon Gil (bongo), Rafael Echenique (congas), Osmar Diamin Romero (vocals, timpani), Jesús Urbina (trumpet) , Isidro "Nino" García (trombone), Felix Cardona (piano) and Felipe Díaz (voice).
The digital reissue of the album includes two bonus tracks that incorporate an indisputable extra attraction: they are songs that La Solvencia recorded after releasing El guacal de la salsa and they are also not compositions by the musicians of the orchestra itself, but versions. Salsa-key adaptations of a Margarita polo and a Venezuelan joropo that reveal the imagination of talented, honest artists and above all determined to pursue their desires.

La historia de la Orquesta La Solvencia es larga y muy particular. La agrupación desarrolló una carrera de más de veinte años, pero grabó un solo disco, El guacal de la salsa, aparecido en 1980, cuando ya empezaba a expandirse y consolidarse un género cuyo bautismo oficial fue responsabilidad de una venezolano, Phidias Danilo Escalona, conductor del programa radial La hora de la salsa, el sabor y el bembé.
El cantante Felipe Díaz y otros músicos de creativa orquesta venezolana habían grabado un 45 RPM a principios de los años 70 como La Órbita Nueva, que fue el germen de La Solvencia, integrada por gente impulsada por la curiosidad y el empeño. “Éramos autodidactas, empíricos -asegura el experimentado cantante Felipe Díaz ahora, en 2024-. Tocábamos por vocación y por oído”, agrega. Y lo cierto es que la soltura de la Orquesta La Solvencia, igual que su frescura y su convicción, certifican sus palabras.
La Solvencia sumó experiencia recorriendo los pueblos de Barlovento en compañía de La Dimensión Latina, la famosa agrupación del gran Oscar d'León, estrella de la música latina y ganador de un Grammy. Era una sociedad virtuosa de músicos por naturaleza. Felipe Díaz formó su primer grupo a los 11 años, Los Tigritos del Ritmo. Había empezado cantando en su casa, cuando era apenas un niño, música venezolana y mexicana a capella. Los Tigritos del Ritmo tenían guitarras, tumbadora, timbal, bongó, marimbula y, por supuesto, la voz inconfundible de Díaz. “Nunca estudié, pero tengo la suerte de ser afinado”, dice él con orgullo. Esa orquesta juvenil derivó después en El Gran Grupo, que todavía existe como El Gran Grupo de Venezuela.
La reedición de una joya como El guacal de la salsa sigue el programa del sello El Palmas Music, creado por el músico, DJ, diseñador y agitador cultural Maurice Aymard y orientado a conservar y difundir el patrimonio de la música popular venezolana, respetando en todos los casos las concepciones originales de sus valiosos artistas.
En este caso recuperando un disco grabado hace más de cuarenta años que da una idea de la vitalidad que la salsa venezolana ya tenía en esa época memorable en términos culturales.

La reedición digital del disco incluye dos bonus tracks que incorporan un indiscutible atractivo extra: son temas que La Solvencia grabó después de editar El guacal de la salsa y además no son composiciones de los músicos de la propia orquesta, sino versiones. Adaptaciones en clave salsera de un polo margariteño y un joropo venezolano que revelan la imaginación de artistas talentosos, honestos y sobre todo decididos a perseguir sus deseos.

This well-deserved reissue is all killer no filler, high octane Latin dance punctuated by hip-swinging percussion, steamy brass and urged on by strident backing vocals.
It's hard to pick a favorite off this excellent pressing but "El Amor de Una Mujer", "Alma Rosa" and "Buscando Una Flor" stand out along with the track mentioned below. Alan Brown
